Concept Statement

Rochester, New York

The Phoenix Building, located at 9-17 Clinton Street in the Midtown District of Rochester, is a two-story International Style building constructed in the 1940s. It was recently acquired by a local developer who intends to renovate and operate it as a hotel, restaurant and retail space that serves the community by providing hospitality and nightlife entertainment to the area.

The Phoenix Building is a dilapidated building that has suffered significant degradation over the past several years. It was previously used as retail space before it was abandoned in 2007 and partially collapsed in 2022. The International Style of the building, characterized by the band of ribbon windows on the second level, will be maintained to preserve this important historical feature.

In ancient times, the well was both symbolically, and often literally, located at the center of a community. Being a means of life, the well represented all resources necessary for a community to thrive. This revitalized building aims to bring a renewed sense of community to the city center to be a place of diversity, expression, and unity. Despite the cultural and economic divisions from which Rochester suffers from, we can come together with a shared purpose to support, engage, create opportunity, and commit to building a new foundation

This was a team project completed with Mak Friery, Amy McFeely and Noah Gill.
